Project Beacon

Project Beacon is a suite of technologies that allows visual impaired, hearing impaired and/or both to have a better means of communication. Technologies like the Braille and Sign language were created before the electronic era and with arrival of technologies like portable communicators and the internet, Braille and sign language were adapted to fit in and these techniques them selves didn't evolve. These methods are really difficult to learn for a beginner and with regional differences in dialects and even languages. For many in emerging markets, it is not as easy to get access to or financially feasible to get a tutors to teach these methods. Not to mention the extremely high priced tools like the electronic Braille.

For the visually and hearing impaired, the technique to communicate is via touch and it is almost impossible to communicate even from a few feet away without touching. Using accessability mode on a cellphone is also not a great option for anyone with these disabilities, as it adapts the technologies that are designed for regular people to work for disabled individuals, which does not provide a great user experience.

User interface for Visually impaired & Decoding to text

Project Beacon helps people with these disabilities to communicate using Morse code. Morse code is quite easy to lean and use. The speed of communication with the Morse code is comparable to the speed at which text messages are sent with a dial-pad interface like in the old-dial pad cellphones. We use a different kind of morse code. We call it asynchronous morse. Instead of relaying on the timing of pressing the dit or dash, dits and dashes are separated by a 3rd character entered by a gesture. Morse input can be given with the smartphone interface, or with a hardware accessory and the Morse output wil be converted into vibrations in the morse pattern.

Bracelet that vibrate in morse code
Low cost Bluetooth accessory that can be used to enter morse pattern
Bluetooth Joy stick for programable shortcuts and faster morse input.

The alternative to good design is always bad design. There is no such thing as no design.

Project Beacon also comes with a suite of low cost hardware accessories that help the users to interface with their cellphone accessories and smart-home appliances. Project Beacon will also have an Alexa skill and a Google action that works with our technology suite to improve everyday actions. Integration to all virtual assistants including Cortana to do dictations.
